This is a week-long educational program designed to explore language and dialect diversity in English.

Language Diversity Ambassadors

The program will be led by graduate students pursuing degrees in English Sociolinguistics, who have experience teaching and mentoring high school students.

What?

The program employs a curriculum designed to promote language awareness for high school students. It will allow students to critically examine language use and its importance in society. Additionally, students will learn about different regional, social, and ethnic dialects in the United States, and the ways in which language serves as a component of diversity.

Why?

Language is often overlooked as an important component of diversity. This program will foster critical thinking and expose students to material that will likely not be found in other diversity programs. Additionally, research suggests that students who are equipped with knowledge of dialect diversity and the ways in which language varies for different contexts, audiences, and purposes, perform better on writing tasks and demonstrate higher levels of empathy for others. Students may also list participation in the program on resumes and college applications to demonstrate that they value and have knowledge of language diversity.

When?

The program held daily from 10 AM to 2 PM from Monday, July 23rd through Friday, July 27th.

Where?

The program will be held on N.C. State's campus in Tompkins Hall, home of NCSU Linguistics.

How?

There is no cost to participate in the program. However, students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from the program. Additionally, students must bring their own lunches, or money to purchase lunch. Snacks will be provided by the program.

Interested students should complete the interest form here by June 15th at 5 p.m. Selected students and their parents/guardians will be contacted in early July to verify attendance.

Parents/guardians are required to sign a permission form for students to participate. This form may be signed and emailed as a .jpg/.pdf to nclanguagediversityambassadors@gmail.com, or submitted in person on the first day of the program. Students who do not have a signed permission waiver will not be allowed to participate in the program.
